Hot days of April??

Was 100 degrees out in Corona where we conducted a training class in the Santa Ana River. We were measuring the width, depth, and other characteristics of the river.

Juvenile Bald Eagle

Bald Eagles are pretty uncommon in southern California, but they are becoming more of a common site in many areas. We found this young bird hanging out near some of our ponds. They will catch prey as large as Canadian Geese, which are large birds.

Great Blue Heron

We get lots of mammals showing up on our field cameras it is always nice when we get something a tad different. This Great Blue Heron grows to be 4 feet tall, and eats just about anything that flies, scurries, or swims in front of it.

Cameras

We have set out a couple of field cameras that will snap off a shot everytime something walks by. They operate day and night. We get coyotes nightly, and every few nights or so we get other critters including bobcats, skunks, and raccoons.

Nevada Buck Moth

For the past few weeks I have been helping to trap the Nevada Buck Moth. The ent0mologist studying these moths is hoping to learn more about the phermones used to attract the males to the females. The traps are baited with different phermones and then set out in different locations. Later in the day we returned to check which phermone mixture caught the most males. The moths are then released. We have been catching between 150-200 moths each day.
